In Crow Lake, the four boys find shelter from the rules imposed by adults in a derelict ex-Soviet military base located alongside a NATO air base. It has become no-man’s-land; bygone military secrets lie buried beneath its bunkers and hangars as modern fighter-jets fly overhead. The children proclaim the territory their ‘Freedom Zone’: a place where no one can inhibit them. The boys build their own hang-glider in one of the abandoned hangars and prepare for the day they will fly it. Meanwhile, an odd vagabond seeks shelter in no-man’s-land. The boys dub him ‘The Bum’ and brazenly drive him out of the ‘Freedom Zone’. A ‘territorial war’ is declared and the ensuing conflict reveals the children’s differing characters and callings.

”Behold Vilnius”does not pretend to be an academic treatment of the photographic history of Vilnius, nor does it present in an encyclopedic fashion all of the masters who have created photographic images of the city. It’s a film about love – a love for a city and for its citizens, which is why it consists of images of people engaged in various activities. At times we see these people, while at others they have just passed by, or are about to arrive – or else it’s the city’s walls that tell their tales of the physical contact, glances, and sighs they have taken in down through the centuries. In a word, this film – which is not a promotional film for tourists – is populated by images of a city that were shot by old masters and contemporary photographers; they are images of a city that is and has been lived in.

Filmo sumanymas – atskleisti moters dvasingumą ir jo raiškos galimybę Lietuvos visuomenėje. Filmo herojė Kristina baigusi teologijos studijas Oksforde siekia būti įšventinta kunige, kad galėtų visapusiškai patarnauti savo parapijiečiams, su kuriais ji atkūrė Vilniaus evangelikų liuteronų parapiją. Būdama kunigo padėjėja ji gali daug nuveikti žmonių labui, savo patarimais ir malda sustiprinti juos susirgus ar ištikus nelaimei, tačiau kol nėra oficialiai ordinuota, neturi galimybės teikti švenčiausių sakramentų. Parapijiečiai keletą kartų kreipėsi į vyskupą, prašydami, kad įšventintų Kristiną kunige, tačiau atsakymas buvo neigiamas. Nuo studijų pabaigos praėjo dešimt metų. Kristina nusprendė nebesiekti šventinimų, tačiau daryti viską, kad jos auklėjamos mergaitės būtų drąsios, išdidžios ir tvirtai siektų savo tikslo.

KRISTINA AND CHRIST
In Lithuania, women occupy a lower position than men in the Lutheran Church hierarchy. Kristina, a graduate of the Oxford University, is not ordained to become a priest because she is a woman.
As an assistant pastor, she can act as a lay person only. Committed to theology and educating others, she focuses on encouraging women and younger generation in her community to seek equal rights of women and men in the Church and society at large.
After the national premiere of this film, the Bishop and the Consistory of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lithuania banned Kristina from teaching in the church and its institutions, accusing her of violating church teachings, and dismissed her from the position of assistant pastor.
This film is part of the International film collection “Gender Montage”, initiated and sponsored by Open Society Institute Network Women’s Program (NY).
